Tori-no-ichi

Tori-no-Ichi market is a traditional annual event in November on the day of the rooster in Chinese zodiac calendar.

A famous one is in Asakusa, Tokyo and it started about 400 years ago as a harvest festival.

Bamboo rake charms

A speciality of this market is ‘bamboo rake charm’.

It’s called ‘Kumade’ in Japanese meaning a paw of bear.

Those decorated bamboo rake charms are believed to bring happiness and prosperity in business.

Those rakes are decorated with lots of things considered lucky items such as gold coins, a treasure ship, seven gods of good luck, plum trees, a turtle and so on. Anything auspicious can be put on as far as I see.
